Startup time management and The Law of 1440

Startup time management is a problem that comes up a lot.  There is so much to do and it is hard to prioritize.  There are typically new tasks popping up everyday, fires to put out and then high priority items that are becoming more urgent with each passing day.  It begins to look like lower priority items will just never get done.

The Law of 1440 states simply:  “There are only 1440 minutes in a day and not a damned thing you can do about it.”

This law serves as a reminder to startups that sometimes you need to let go and realize that some things just won’t get done.  The trick is to focus on the really important items and spend your time there.  Some of your tasks will be lower priority and at some point in the priority order that means they will *never* actually get done. And that is ok.

You need to be at peace with it and prioritize wisely, stressing out won’t help at all.  In fact, take 5 minutes right now and throw away your bottom 3 lowest priority items – it will probably make you feel better and they didn’t matter very much anyway. 🙂
